Ice Blocks Guide

How to Get Packed Ice Bricks in Minecraft

Craft four packed ice blocks into a 2×2 square on a crafting table and you get one packed ice bricks block. The bricks themselves never require Silk Touch and always drop when mined — the Silk Touch pickaxe is only for collecting the packed ice ingredients. Packed ice bricks are currently experimental, available in Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21+ and Java 26.4 Snapshot 5+, and release for everyone in Q4 2026.

What you need first

Step 1: Get packed ice

Packed ice is the only ingredient, and it's the hard part: without Silk Touch, mining packed ice drops nothing. Four reliable routes:

MethodDetails
Silk Touch miningMine packed ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe in the ice spikes biome, on frozen peaks, or in frozen-ocean icebergs. Without Silk Touch it drops nothing — but unlike regular ice it never leaves water behind.
Ice caves (new)Fourth Drop 2026 adds packed ice generation throughout the new ice caves biome, including giant packed-ice speleothem columns. Same rule: Silk Touch required.
Wandering traderOccasionally sells one packed ice for a single emerald — the cheapest option if you only need a few blocks and a trader shows up.
Craft from ice9 ice → 1 packed ice. Ice also needs Silk Touch to drop, so this only helps if your ice supply is easier to reach than packed ice. Note it's one-way: packed ice cannot be unpacked.

Step 2: Craft the bricks

Place your four packed ice in a 2×2 square — that's it. The recipe is listed verbatim in both the Java 26.4 Snapshot 5 and Bedrock Preview 26.70.21 changelogs ("crafted using a 2×2 square of packed ice"), so it works identically in both editions.

Step 3: Variants — slab, stairs, wall and chiseled

The bricks aren't a single block but a full building set:

In short: packed ice is for going fast, bricks are for building pretty. If you're comparing all six ice blocks, we keep the full table in All Ice Blocks in Minecraft Compared.

Java vs Bedrock availability

The set landed in both editions on the same day, October 20, 2026:

Until the Fourth Drop 2026 releases (Q4 2026, exact date unannounced), treat all of this as experimental: recipes and behavior can still change, and worlds opened in test builds should be backed up.
